DUAL bus external storage system supporting 12 (1") high or 8 (1.6") high hot-pluggable hard drives and delivering enhanced availability and serviceability features with Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 data transfer rates outside the server (40 MB/s).

Standard Features:

Expandability - Supports up to 12 (1") or 8 (1.6") hot-pluggable Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 hard drives on a DUAL SCSI bus (also supports Fast-Wide SCSI-2 and Fast SCSI-2). The ProLiant Storage System Model U2 can support up to 145.6 GB of storage, using 18.2-GB disk drives.

Hot Pluggable - Hot Pluggable technology is used for drives, power supplies and fans. Hot Pluggable components can be replaced without powering down the storage system. This feature significantly enhances storage system availability.

Improved Availability and Serviceability - Storage system units include hot-pluggable, redundant cooling fans and support for an optional redundant, hot-pluggable power supply.

Auto SCSI ID Selection - SCSI ID is automatically set when a drive is inserted into a drive bay.

LED Status Indicators - Front panel LEDs indicate drive activity, when a drive requires service, and when power is on or off giving a quick visual assessment of overall system storage status. LED status and fault indicators for the fans and power supplies are located in the back of the enclosure.

Rack Density - The rack-mountable ProLiant Storage System Model U2 has a 4U height, providing 25% greater storage density than the original ProLiant Storage System Rack model.

Fault Tolerance - Supports RAID fault tolerance (RAID 0, 1, 4, 5) when used with the Compaq Smart Array 3200 or any one of the Compaq SMART-2 Array Controllers1.

Manageability - Numerous drive fault-prevention features supported when used with Compaq Insight Manager (v4.20 or higher) and the Compaq Smart Array 3200 or one of the Compaq SMART-2 Array Controllers1 including:

Storage Parameter Tracking
Used together, the Compaq Insight Manager (v.4.20 or higher) and the

Smart Array 3200 or SMART-2 Array Controllers1 predict drive failures and allow Pre-Failure replacement, notify administrator of a drive failure, and gather information that can be used to manage the disk subsystem.

Thermal Tracking
Monitors internal temperature and fan status; alerts administrator when a factory preset warning temperature is exceeded or a fan fails during operation.

Compatibility and Integration Testing - Intensive compatibility and performance testing with Compaq ProLiant and ProSignia servers ensure the highest level of integration available in the industry on a Compaq server.

The Model U2 product kit contains SmartStart Pack (v4.20 or higher) which includes the necessary firmware, software, and management agents updates.
  2. Some restrictions and exclusions apply. Consult the Compaq Customer Support Center for details.
  3. For complete compatibility information, refer to Compaq Pluggable SCSI Hard Drive Compatibility (.pdf). Using Compaq hard drives in unsupported configurations will result in voiding of the warranty and could result in damage to the drive and/or loss of data.

What is the difference between the ProLiant Storage System Model UE and the ProLiant Storage System Model U2?

A3:

The ProLiant Storage System Model UE is a single bus drive expansion enclosure that supports twelve (1") or eight (1.6") drives on a single bus, while the ProLiant Storage System Model U2 is a dual bus drive expansion enclosure that supports six (1") or four (1.6") drives per bus. All the other outstanding features of the ProLiant Storage System Model U2 are incorporated in the ProLiant Storage System UE.

 

 

Q4:

Will the new ProLiant Storage System Model U2 support the same hot-pluggable drives and drive trays that were used in the ProLiant Storage System/U and the ProLiant Storage System/F?

A4:

Yes. The ProLiant Storage System Model U2 utilizes the same Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 hot-pluggable drives and drive trays as the ProLiant Storage System/U and the ProLiant Storage System/F. Slower drives (Fast-Wide SCSI-2) will plug and run with the new ProLiant Storage System Model U2, but will not operate at Wide-Ultra data rates. For additional compatibility issues with much older drives, see Service Advisory 1104 for more detail.

Can I mix 1" and 1.6" hard disk drives in the ProLiant Storage System Model U2?

A5:

Yes, as with any ProLiant Storage System/U family enclosure, you can mix both drive types.

Will my Compaq SMART-2 Array and Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 Controllers work with the ProLiant Storage System Model U2?

A6:

Yes. The Compaq SMART-2DH, 2SL, 2/P, 2/E Array and Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 Controllers will work with the ProLiant Storage System Model U2, but firmware, software, and management agents upgrades are required. The ProLiant Storage System Model U2 product kit includes the latest version of the Compaq SmartStart Pack CD which contains the firmware, software, and management agents upgrades that allow the Model U2 to support Compaq SMART-2 Array and Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 Controllers.

(*NOTE: SMART-2/P Array Controllers shipped from Feb. to June 1996 do not support Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 data rates in the hardware. By running the Compaq diagnostic utility, "Inspect", a customer can identify the revision level of their SMART-2/P Array Controller; revision "B" of the controller incorporates Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 hardware support. The SMART-2/E does not support Wide-Ultra SCSI-3).

Can I upgrade an existing ProLiant Storage System/F or a ProLiant Storage System/U to a ProLiant Storage System Model U2?

Yes. Upgrade kits for both single and dual bus ProLiant Storage System/F and ProLiant Storage System/U enclosures will be available at the time of product announcement. Upgrading the ProLiant Storage System Model F2 or Model U2 will involve an I/O board replacement in the Storage System and updating your firmware, software and management agents. Upgrading the ProLiant Storage System Model F1 or Model U1 will involve an I/O board and drive cage replacement in the Storage System and updating your firmware, software, management agents.

 

 

Q8:

Will Compaq continue to offer the ProLiant Storage System Model U1?

A8:

No, the ProLiant Storage System Model U2 will replace the ProLiant Storage System Model U1. However, to provide a smooth transition for our customers, the Model U1 will be available through the end of first quarter 1999. Further, to continue to provide failover solutions, OSCRO, RSO, or ProLiant S100 Cluster, for our customers, Compaq will revise the Model U1 offering to include RSO. This new offering, the Model U1/With RSO, will deliver a high availability storage system to meet our customers' needs. The Model U1/With RSO will be available in the first quarter 1999 and will be the only configuration in which the Model U1 will be available.

 

 

Q9:

Will Compaq continue to offer the RSO, OSCRO, and ProLiant S100 Cluster Option Kits which are supported by the ProLiant Storage System, ProLiant Storage System Model F1 and Model U2?

Yes. These kits will continue to be offered as they are today for those existing customers who have already purchased the ProLiant Storage System, ProLiant Storage System Model F1, or ProLiant Storage System Model U1. The ProLiant S100 Kit today requires the RSO switch board as a prerequisite, once the Model U1/With RSO is released, the S100 prerequisite will be either the Model U1/With RSO , or the current RSO option for those customers who already have the ProLiant Storage System, ProLiant Storage System Model F1, or ProLiant Storage System Model U1.

Will Compaq continue to offer the ProLiant Storage System Model U2?

Yes. Compaq will continue to offer the ProLiant Storage System Model U2 alongside the ProLiant Storage System Model UE to meet our customers' external storage requirements.
